Why study digital culture??

I think it is important to have an understanding of digital culture, living in an ever changing and technologically advancing world. Digital technology and electronic forms of communication are the future.
As an aspiring journalist I feel it’s essential to know the benefits of digital culture, how to use it effectively, and the different ways that it can be utilised but also to know the dangers and potential pitfalls of the electronic and online world.
Technology has changed the way we read news. It’s given us 24 hour access to news, the opportunity to know things almost as they happen, and the scope to view news from around the world where perhaps before we hadn’t the opportunity or the desire to know more than what we felt locally affected us.
But most importantly digital culture has given everyone the chance to broadcast their opinions and views. Giving anyone a platform from which they can potentially be “journalists”.
Digital Culture has become a massive and in some cases overbearing part of our lives, with Facebook, Twitter, the internet, email, text messaging it is something I personally interact with every day of my life and it’s something people of my generation have grown up with and take for granted.
Why Study Digital Culture? Because in my opinion, it is the single most influential advancement of the past 20 years it has changed how we live our lives and has become an integral part of them, and I can only see it advancing further. The only worry is can it go too far? and where do we draw the line??
